Russell was born on 19 October 1921 in the USA, at Roundup, Montana. His father, (an American citizen who was deceased by the time of Russell's enlistment), was a farmer and was born in Illinois, USA. His mother was born in Wisconsin, USA. He had one married sister. The schools he attended were Bellcamp, at Marwayne, Alberta 1929 -1935 followed by Elgin 1935-1936. His records then show him in 1937 at a school for scholarships (mechanics and farm work). He is next shown in 1936-1940 as working for a Mrs M. Holmes (possibly his mother). They lived at Marwayne, Alberta. His sport interests were skiing, softball, and skating, his hobbies fishing and hunting. |
Russell enlisted on 13 January 1941 and after training was posted to the U.K. where he arrived on 19 February 1942 and went on to 1.S.S. 24 March 1942. He then continued to 2 (0)AFU 11 May 1942, 22 OTU 9 June 1942 and 15 Squadron 23 September 1942. Sadly he was next shown as missing on 16 December 1942. |
